MEDICAL APPLICATIONS OF THE CYCLOTRON EXTERNAL BEAMLINE AT CENTRO NACIONAL DE ACELERADORES
The cyclotron that has been installed in the National Accelerator Center (CNA) since 2004 is from the Belgian company IBA (Ion Beam Applications), model cyclone 18/9 HOV. This accelerator has two sources of ions, one of protons and one of deuterons, with respective beam energies of 18 MeV and 9 MeV. This accelerator has eight exit ports, one of which is attached to an external line that transports the beam to an adjacent bunker where experiments in different research areas can be carried out. The other seven exit windows are currently dedicated to the production and research of radiopharmaceuticals for use in positron emission tomography.
In this seminar the main technical characteristics of the external beamline coupled to the cyclotron will be described. In addition, some of the studies within the field of Medical Physics performed in recent years in this facility will be shown. These are:
- Preparation and characterization of the 18 MeV proton line for radiobiology experiments.
- Calibration of new 3D microdetectors for microdosimetry in hadrontherapy.
- Range verification measures through the measurement of the cross section of production of β+ emitters.
