PHYSICAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR CHERENKOV-BASED CTR MEASUREMENTS IN BGO
Exploiting the moderate Cherenkov yield from 511 keV photoelectric interactions is a potential solution to introduce BGO scintillators in time-of-flight positron emission tomography (TOF-PET) applications. Recent improvements in vacuum- and near- ultra-violet high density (VUV- and NUV-HD) silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) technology combined with efficient data post- processing methods, make it possible to access
the Cherenkov population.
To achieve good coincidence time resolution (CTR) it is also required the implementation of low noise and fast readout electronics with small effective capacitance.
This talk reports the CTR evaluation of the new VUV and NUV enhanced SiPMs by using different types of BGO scintillators, as well as the implementation of state-of-the-art data correction methods. As a closing point, the talk includes the description of our electronics chain design which, if successful, may be the first scalable solution for BGO TOF-PET systems.
